SAPI vs. ESAPI Plates

If you go online now and search for information about bullet proof vest or body armor, chances are that you would most likely come across terms like plate carriers, ballistic plate, ballistic panel, or trauma plate.

At the end of the day, they all point to two different things – SAPI and ESAPI. SAPI stands for “Small Arms Protective Inserts” while ESAPI simply have to do with “Enhanced SAPI”. ESAPI can also be referred to as ceramic plate inserts. If you want to purchase body armor or a plate carrier, it is very important that you understand these terms and how they work before making a choice.

SAPI – Small Arms Protective Inserts

This simply stands for ballistic plates that are made with ceramic materials. These plates have an external composite coating that is responsible for its durability and ballistic resistant qualities. The SAPI is available in different sizes and can be used for different plate carriers as insertions. They are not burdensome when it comes to weight. Some of the largest SAPI often weigh around 5 and half pounds and some of the smallest SAPI are approximately around 3 pounds.

Typically, when in use, SAPI are expected to be worn at the front and at the back of a tactical vest or plate carriers. Depending on the situation, side plates can be added for extra protection.

ESAPI – Enhanced Small Arms Protective Inserts

They are made from a substance slightly off the ceramic material called Boron Carbide. This material gives it an additional sturdiness and ballistic resistance at a relatively lighter weight. More protection, less weight.

The ESAPI can weigh between 6 and half to 8 pounds. However, they can be quite delicate to handle. While they are fearless in the face of bullets, they can still break when improperly handled.
